It was a stone circle, heavier than Seph expected from the size of it, in a flat black color. It was covered with faint markings scratched into the surface. There was a sense of depth to it, as if he were looking through a window. But when he peered through the center, he was looking into... nothing. When he passed his hand behind it, there was still nothing.
"What is it?" he asked, trying to hand it back to Jason.
The other boy shook his head. "The general term is dyrne sefa, meaning heartstone, or secret heart. They are objects that act as assist devices to the gifted. [...] It's a piece from my mother's collection."
--The Wizard Heir, pg. 142
Jason Haley was born a wizard to a hedge wizard and a member of the Anaweir, the nonmagical humans who have no knowledge of the Weir. His mother was a researcher into the Old Magic, with access to amulets and talismans which she left to her son when she died. When his father, from whom all of this had been kept, remarried... he rebelled.
It got him sent to the Havens. Which is when his life went to Hell.
Because he knew enough of the Old Magic from his mother, he refused the linking offered by Gregory Leicester that would have led to his enslavement and was subjected to all manner of physical, psychological, and emotional abuse. When he tried to talk to his father about it, his father was magically forced to forget all complaints. Leicester didn't feel this was adequate enough warning to Jason, though, and shortly thereafter caused the man to suffer a fatal heart attack.
Jason was told implicitly whose fault that was, as well as where, why, and how it would happen. Then he was made to sit in the office and wait for the call from the hospital.
He and another boy attempted to incite the students, Weir and Anaweir alike, to revolt only to have the plan backfire. One friend was killed and the other was made to become the enemy, one of Leicester's lackeys. Jason never forgot that lesson, nor the fact that friends were just more people you could lose.
Following this, Jason then spent his time hiding away from the other students and studying magic in secret, experimenting with strings of incantations as the spirit moved him in his eventual quest to kill Gregory Leicester and assist a figure known as the Dragon in his goal: to eradicate the superiority of wizards over the rest of the magical guilds.
...then he met Seph McCauley. And things got real interesting.
He looked to be seventeen or eighteen, slightly built, dressed in a black T-shirt and jeans. His hair was dark, but had been bleached out at the tips and spiked, an amateur job. He had two earrings in one ear and one in the other. He was grinning as if delighted.
--The Wizard Heir, pg. 125
Jason is a wizard, in possession of a Weir stone located just behind his heart which allows him to use thought, spoken, or acted charms. Jason's gift is in glamors, magical illusions with little firepower that can nonetheless be used to confuse, distract, startle, scare, or otherwise fool people. Whether it's making himself unnoticeable or making an elaborate vision of a dragon, Jason surpasses even those a century his senior. Judging from his actions, he's also quite skilled at magical analysis, covert operations, and information gathering. Perhaps because of his experience at the Havens (or maybe just his mother's example), he's something of a risk taker in magic, with a tendency to string together charms with almost suicidal glee. For all his wild abandon, however, he's brilliant (especially when it comes to research).
As a wizard, Jason can Persuade non-magical types with a touch, or torture them just as easily; the likelihood of the former is very high (though will never be done without asking and getting an okay) but the likelihood of the latter is almost nil.
Jason Haley is from The Wizard Heir and The Dragon Heir and as such is the creation and property of Cinda Chima. This journal is for nonprofit, entertainment purposes only; no infringement is intended.
